Why five preset amounts and not fifteen
Ask any long-time du prepaid user in the UAE and you will get one of a handful of answers when the balance dips: a small top-up before a coffee run, a mid one for the week, a bigger one before a trip. The rest are edge cases.
The five
- 30 AED — the starter, the “please do not disconnect me on the way home” top-up.
- 55 AED — a week or so of casual talk plus a data bundle.
- 110 AED — the most-picked value; comfortable buffer without over-committing.
- 210 AED — a two-line household, refilled every couple of months.
- 525 AED — a pre-trip roam-ready buffer, or a family line’s quarterly bump.
The custom field
Anything from 5 to 1000 AED goes in the custom field. It is deliberately plain — a text input with a hint, no fancy slider. Sliders look neat and are terrible on small touch screens; a number is a number is a number.
What we did not add
Every extra chip nudges the picker further from “decide in a glance.” We considered adding 15, 20, 75, 150, 300 and 1000 as presets. The last analytics we can trust said those six together made up less than 8% of tickets. So they stayed inside the custom field, which handles them just fine.
